Persuasive Principles 1,2,3

 Persuasive Principle
Law of Connectivity

Book Definition: "The Law of Connectivity states that the more someone feels connected to, similar to, liked by, or attracted to, the more persuasive you become"

My Definition: This essentially means that if you able to make some one feel a connection with yourself, the less likely they are to not be persuaded by you.

Analysis: I use this law daily to connect to others around me. I find the quickest way to get someone to like you is to make them invest in you as a person. To do this you must simply ask them an easy question they can answer with confidence. A safe move is to get them talking about themselves. Because a person already likes them self they will feed off of that energy we connecting to you.

Usage:  I will use this method this semester and far beyond because its super crucial to build these relationships with people wherever you go. If you are unable to build a connection with someone they are more likely to forget you.

Examples:

1.) This Example is from the office Andy the guy on the right is attempting to make Michael like him in order to become his number 2. Michael is timid to accept his friendship.

Target: Michael Scott(The Boss)

Persuader: Andy Bernard

Method: Trying to set up time to hang out outside of work

Success?: This attempt was not successful because Andy didn't have a strong connection before he attempted to solidify the connection. He didn't let the glue dry! This didn't allow him to persuade Michael to hang out with him. This is a negative example of digital citizenship because Andy is only trying to build a connection to further his career and not because he genuinely cares.

2.) Dale and Brennan are becoming friends and they connect with each other by talking about the things that they have in common. This is how the build an connection.

Target: Dale

Persuader: Brennen

Method: Asking him to answer question they may have in common

Success?: Yes, Because of the similarities in their answer there was a successful connection made and He was able to persuade him to be his friend. This is a positive example of digital citizenship because Dale just wants Brennan to be his friend.

3.) In this clip these twins are brothers talking to two other brothers about their college. The connect over the fact that they say everything together which makes them strengthen their connection. They are trying to pursade the other brothers they are better brothers.

Target: Schmidt and Jenko

Persuader: Twins

Method: Connection demonstration

Success?:Yes, They use their already formed connection to demonstrate their ability to say the same things. This isn't necessarily a good or bad demonstration because they are just proving who is better. This is not a bad thing to do, being better than someone is good for cultivating people to be better.

 Persuasive Principle 2
Law of Involvement

Book Definition: “The Law of Involvement suggests that the more you engage someone’s five senses, involve them mentally and physically, and create the right atmosphere for persuasion, the more effective and persuasive you’ll be.”

My Definition: Make someone think they're are a part of the situation to lessen their worry of being persuaded. If they feel in control they let their guard down.

Analysis: I do not use this principle. I am a very shy person in social settings to trying to engage people to move or interact with me isn't something I actively do. However as a Orientation Leader in the past I was forced to use this skill. It worked well for me because when I want to I am able to involve others,

Usage:  I don't plan to use this skill much more throughout my life. I am almost done with my education and as a Computer Science major my need to involve others in my day-to-day life is dwindling down.

Examples:
1.) This example is from the movie Dead Poets Society and in this clip Robin Williams tries to get some to take action and make something of their lives,

Target: Students

Persuader: Robin Williams

Method: Making them fear the idea of doing nothing.

Success?:Yes, He adequately made the kids look into their future and consider that they could be someone of greatness. He made them engage all of their senses to sell them on the idea that they need to "seize the day". This is a very positive example of good Digital citizenship because he is trying to better the world through these kids.

2.) In this example Oscar tries to persuade Michael to use the excess surplus to get the office a new copier. He has to get Michael involved to make the persuasion work.

Target: Michael

Persuader: Oscar

Method: Visual Involvement

Success?:Yes, Oscar was able to convince Michael to use the surplus money and invest it into the office. However toy do this he had to talk to Michael like he was a small child. This is basically how you use the law of involvement to make the target feel like they are in control the same way you trick kids into thinking they are in control. This a funny example of good digital citizenship. Oscar could have been rude to Michael when he didn't understand, instead he was nice to him.

3. ) In this example Jeff Gordon goes under cover for Chevy as a test car driver. They prank the car salesman into think that hes in the car with a crazy driver. Little does the driver know hes with one of the best drivers in the world.

Target: America

Persuader: Jeff Gordon and Chevy

Method:Insider Knowledge

Success?:Yes, This commercial involved the audience by making them feel more involved. By letting the audience in on information that the salesman didn't know they feel more involved in the prank which makes the more likely to like or favor Chevy Motors. This is a positive example of digital citizenship because the persuasion is done in a fun and comical way.

Reader Update: Last week I was able to use the Law of Connectivity at work. I want my boss to like me more so I tried to connecting with her on what she did over the weekend and how her home remodel is progressing.

Persuasive Principle 3
Law of Esteem

Book Definition: "The Law of  Esteem identifies that all humans need and want praise, recognition, and acceptance"

My Definition: If you make someone feel special and like they are the center of attention they will do whatever you ask. Then better they feel the more you can manipulate them.

Analysis: I use this form of persuasive communication all the time. I think this is one of the best laws of persuasion. Whenever I need something from my friends or family I first barrade them with compliments to get their self esteem up.

Usage: I will use this skill almost daily through out the semester and later on in life. It is a very crucial skill in networking and building yourself in the job market. This method has been very effective for me and will continue to be effective as I go through life.

Examples:
1.) In this example Jim and Oscar are trying to persuade Michael to side with them in picking a new Copier for the office.

Target: Michael

Persuader: Jim and Oscar

Method: Esteem Boosting

Success?:Yes, Michael is thrilled to be asked out to Lunch, because of this is is way more than happy to go with Oscar and Jim and discuss their new plan to get a copier. This is a good example of digital citizenship because they are making Michael feel more included which is a positive thing to do.

2.)
Whenever money from my mother I tell her shes the best mom ever and ask how her day is going, then I ask her for $20. I get her to open up about her day and acknowledge the compliments I gave to her. She is so thrilled to receive these compliments and inquiry about her day that she agrees to give me the money.

Target: Mother

Persuader: Myself

Method: Compliments

Success?:Yes, saying nice things to my mother so that her self esteem is boosted puts her into a really good mood. Because I just complimented her she is way more inclined to be persuaded. This isn't really a good demonstration of digital citizenship because I am only complimenting in these situations to receive money.

3.) In this example Tom raises Donna self esteem by bringing her donuts. She is so thrilled to have the donuts she immediately agrees to celebrate treat your self 2011.

Target: Donna Meagle

Persuader: Tom Haverford

Method: Donuts

Success?:Yes, Tom brought Donna donuts to raise her self esteem. Because her mood was elevated she was more likely to leave work and spend money on ridiculous things with Tom. The goal of persuasion was successful. This is not a example of good citizenship but it is good that both parties involved are in a positive mood,

Reader Update: Recently I have not been able to use the Law of Involvement. It isn't something I am good at working into my everyday life. However I do think I will be able to use the Law of Esteem in the future.
